- North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA)
This is the premier site for information on therapeutic riding. NARHA is a non-profit organization whose
purpose is to promote the rehabilitation of individuals with physical, emotional and learning disabilities
through equine-facilitated activities. We do this through our worldwide network of member therapeutic
riding centers. For individuals with disabilities, therapeutic riding has been shown to improve muscle
tone, balance, posture, coordination, motor development as well as emotional well-being. And it’s fun!

- Psychophysiological Mechanisms of Therapeutic
"When the mentally retarded brother of educational anthropologist Dr. Betsy Smith waded into the
water with two adolescent dolphins in 1971 (Blow, 1998 in Philips, 1997), some therapeutic
applications became immediately apparent. Nathanson (1980) formally launched the empirical aspect
of the field by investigating physical and cognitive applications of dolphin assisted therapy for
disabled children." (Added: Fri Jun 15 2001)
