    Sneak Peek
    Sneak Peek

This month's featured "Sneak Peek" is from Practical Counseling Skills For Speech Language Pathologists. by J. Scott Yaruss Ph.D.

A 7th grade girl says to her SLP: "My classmates don't like me, and right now I don't like them! Why do they have to be so mean? They make fun of me—well, they make fun of my speech. I've been coming to speech therapy and I know I'm doing a lot better. Gee, they don't have to like me, but I wish they'd stop making fun of me". What do you say next?!?

An adult client with aphasia has been experiencing significant difficulties communicating with his spouse. Through the counseling process, you have helped him identify that he is experiencing anger and frustration toward her, in addition to loneliness and fear about his mortality. What might you do next in treatment and why?

"Counseling microskills" (Attending, Listening, Responding, Probing, Summarizing, Challenging, Brainstorms, Future-Oriented Probes, and Balance Sheets) help clinicians intentionally interact with clients in a supportive, helpful manner. Counseling is not just rote memorization of automatic responses; however, you will select specific responses to achieve your goals. Microskills come more easily to some people, but they can be developed through practice.

To learn more about how you can develop that practice sign up for our newest course, Practical Counseling Skills For Speech Language Pathologists. by J. Scott Yaruss Ph.D.
