Purpose of the Course
- To help speech-language pathologists (SLPs) learn how to
enhance problem-solving skills in individuals who stutter
- To present a series of practical exercises that SLPs can
incorporate into their existing treatment programs to help
their clients who stutter:
- Facilitate generalization of treatment skills
to situations outside of the therapy room
- Enhance long-term maintenance of treatment
skills after the conclusion of treatment
- To provide specific examples of how problem-solving
skills can be used in treatment so clinicians
can help their clients who stutter improve
generalization and maintenance of treatment
skills
Following this presentation, participants will be able to:
- List 3 reasons that generalization and maintenance
can be difficult for individuals who stutter.
- Explain the rationale
for teaching specific problem-solving skills to individuals
who stutter.
- Describe a detailed problem-solving plan that can
be used in treatment to help individuals who
stutter improve generalization.
- Design and implement effective
a treatment program that incorporates effective problem-solving
skills

ASHA Fellow, BRS-FD, is an associate professor at the University
of Pittsburgh and Co-director of the Stuttering Center of Western
Pennsylvania. Yaruss conducts research on the onset and development
of stuttering in preschool children, including analysis of
linguistic and motoric source factors that contribute to children's

is a board-recognized specialist and mentor in fluency disorders
and staff speech language pathologist at Purdue University,
specializing in the treatment of stuttering for children and

is a board-recognized specialist and mentor in fluency disorders
and professor at Western Illinois University. He teaches courses
