Course Description

Participants will be able to:

  1. Label the anatomy of the esophagus
  2. Describe the physiology of the esophagus and the swallow mechanism
  3. Define Esophageal reflux and describe its affects on the voice, swallow, and airway (VSA)
  4. Describe irritable larynx syndrome and its affects on the airway
  5. List successful treatments for irritable larynx syndrome
  6. View successful case studies of ILS with treatment (irritable larynx syndrome)
  7. List indications for specific Endoscopic exams necessary for accurate diagnosis and treatment. (TNV, TNB, TNE)
  8. Describe esophageal disorders and how they affect the upper airway with video examples
  9. Define esophageal dysphagia
  10. Describe the importance of dysphagia history in differential diagnosis
  11. Define LPR and how this affects the voice, swallow, and airway
  12. Describe how allergic disease affects the voice, swallow, and airway
  13. Describe how Neurologic Disease States affect the voice, swallow, and airway
  14. Describe how Thyroid Disease affects the VSA
  15. List the reasons for the necessity to obtain an accurate diagnose in treatment of the professional vocalist
  16. List the goals for a SLP in treatment of the professional vocalist
  17. List voice pathologies in case studies of professional vocalists ( video case examples)
  18. Describe how medications may affect voice, swallow, and airway
  19. List specific guidelines to promote voice hygiene and recovery of the professional vocalist.
