Course Description

This program is offered for 1.0 CEUs or 10 hours of continuing professional development (Introductory Level: Professional area). Price: $175.00

Dysphagia Management is a large and ever growing part of the service a Speech Language Pathologist delivers. The number of programs offering courses in Dysphagia is also growing. However, those practicing clinicians who began their training in the “old days” did not have the opportunity to take formal college courses, and or have practical, internships, and even Cays that included experience in this area.

Having been a part of the University of Florida Clinical Faculty for the last ten years, practicing Dysphagia management in acute, sub acute and long term care settings, lecturing nationally on Dysphagia at an Introductory level, and putting on the Florida Dysphagia Institute for the last six years, I was able to putt together much of the basic and most current information in the field from a variety of well renowned experts. It is difficult, if not impossible for many clinicians to travel to the conferences and workshops now available not only for reasons of time, but distance and financial considerations. I was asked repeatedly to organize the information I presented at my Introductory Dysphagia Management course into a home/study at a reasonable cost. The result is this CEU course.

This course discusses the evaluation and treatment of dysphagia. Topics include clinical signs and predictors, a practice cranial nerve exam and Mann Assessment of Swallowing Disability exam that you will do with a partner, cervical auscultation, endoscopic evaluation of swallowing, and electrical stimulation for swallowing.

At the successful completion of the course, participants should be able to:

  • Define Dysphagia
  • List the clinical signs and symptoms of Dysphagia
  • List problems that may exist as a result of Dysphagia
  • List reliable clinical indicators at bedside that Dysphagia exists
  • List medications that may cause or exacerbate Dysphagia
  • List reliable indicators of aspiration
  • List the Cranial Nerves and how to test each one
  • Perform a Cranial Nerve Examination on a patient or normal volunteer
  • Define cervical auscultation
  • List abnormalities you might hear during cervical auscultation of swallowing
  • Name tests that may be used to extend the clinical exam
  • Define terms common to the Endoscopic Assessment of Swallowing
  • List various treatment strategies used in Dysphagia Management
  • List muscles used in normal swallowing
  • List nerves that innervate the swallowing muscles.
