This course focuses on recognizing communication disorders associated with learning disabilities and their characteristics as well as assessment and intervention strategies. Topics covered include; definitions and etiology of learning disability, characteristics of learning disabilities, communication disorders associated with learning disabilities, language based learning disabilities, characteristics of learning problems in children with language based learning disabilities, overview of assessment, assessment and the law, assessment in educational setting, components of a thorough assessment, methods of gathering information, the parent's role in the assessment process, the role of speech language pathologists in literacy development in language based learning and intervention strategies.

At the successful completion of the course, participants should be able to:

Author

Nahla Dashash, Ph.D.Dr. Dashash is currently the Director of Training and Clinical Competency Programs at the Jeddah Institute for Speech and Hearing (JISH). Her duties include designing and implementing the competency program for Graduate and Undergraduate level Speech and Language Pathologist and SLP Assistants as well as designing, implementing and coordinating for JISH SLP’s. She also serves as a consultant Speech Language Pathologist for the Clinical Services Department.

She received a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Communication Sciences and Disorders/Child Language from Howard University, Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, Washington DC, USA in December 2004, a Master of Arts (M.A) in Speech Pathology and Audiology from San Jose State University, Department of Communication Disorders, San Jose, California, USA in August 1999 and a Bachelor of Science Degree of Applied Medical Sciences in the Field of Rehabilitation-Speech and Hearing disorders from King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in Spring 1990.
