Dr. Benson has supported persons with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) for the last 28 years. Initially she taught at a private school for children with autism and then completed her Master's degree at the University of Auckland, Auckland New Zealand. Subsequently she returned to her native Canada where she consulted in Edmonton Public Schools and throughout northern Alberta.
She ultimately completed her doctorate in Educational Psychology at Madison Wisconsin. The research for her Master's thesis as well as her Doctoral dissertation investigated the communicative abilities of high functioning persons on the Autism Spectrum.
Following her PhD, she became the Director of the Autism Program for the state of South Dakota and Assistant Professor in Pediatrics at USD. She then moved on to teach at the University of Louisville for the Kentucky Autism Training Center.
Dr. Benson conducted a mission for the United Nations to the United Arab Emirates where she was Senior Advisor to the UNOPS. She provided a needs assessment for Abu Dhabi and designed a development plan.
Presently she teach courses on ASD for various universities, colleges and school districts and at National Conferences, including the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA) She also conducts trainings on issues pertaining to persons on the Autism Spectrum throughout the nation and beyond. Functional behavior assessments or FBAs comprise a portion of her practice as well.
Dr. Benson hosted and co-produced a VHS/DVD on Autism Spectrum Disorders (2001, Attainment Company).
