ADHD: Integrative Strategies for Assessment and Intervention

Author: Carol Kauffman, M.A., CCC-SLP

Approved CE Provider - American Speech-Language Hearing Association
Online Continuing Education

Course Description

This program is offered for .5 CEUs or 5 hours of continuing professional development (Intermediate Level: Professional area). Price: $110.00

This course has been organized into several sections.

In the ADHD Basics and Beyond section, we will explore the many perspectives of ADHD in “bird’s eye view” fashion.

In the ADHD and Communication Connections section, we will be taking a look at the many areas correlated with ADHD with special emphasis on language. I will also address ADHD connections with executive function, traumatic brain injury, reading, writing, auditory processing, hearing, learning disabilities, mental retardation and developmental disabilities, sensorimotor function, autism spectrum disorders, Tourette Syndrome, and emotional disorders. I will also briefly address special issues related to toddlers and preschoolers.

In the Assessment section, I will present a model of a comprehensive, multidisciplinary assessment protocol. In this model, all pieces to the diagnostic “pie” are addressed through various diagnostic tools.

The Intervention section, will explore specific intervention topics through the “Treatment Triangle” model: biological, behavioral, and environmental supports.

As a summary, in the “Putting It All Together” section, I will suggest a sample “game plan” to serve as a springboard for helping you organize information for implementing or adding to your programs as you see fit – through new technologies, new protocols, ideas, and certainly, I hope, new collaborative relationships with other parents and professionals in your area.

At the successful completion of the course, participants should be able to:

  • identify current ADHD theories and correlations with language and language-related disorders,
  • recognize specific assessment protocols for children with ADHD and language disorders within a multidisciplinary framework,
  • identify comprehensive intervention programs for children with ADHD and language disorders through a multidisciplinary framework,
  • recall more effective ways to collaborate among professionals and caregivers, and
  • recall other ADHD worldwide resources through the internet and other sources
