This 1 hour continuing education course focuses on the myths and facts of HIV and AIDS including the modes of transmission, statistics, prevention and treatment. Infection control procedures and post-exposure management for healthcare professionals are addressed as well as current Florida law in regards to confidentiality in testing, counseling, offering of HIV testing to pregnant women, and partner notification issues. Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify three modes of transmission and methods of prevention of HIV.
  • Identify specific populations at risk for HIV and AIDS globally and nationally.
  • List the standard precautions healthcare professionals should take to prevent exposure to HIV and AIDS
  • Identify the CDC recommendations for HIV testing
  • List treatment options for HIV and AIDS
  • Recognize the current Florida law requirements in regards to confidentiality and treatment of patients
Course Outline

Lesson 1 – Course Information, Requirements, Reason for the Course and Omnibus AIDS Act of Florida

Lesson 2 - Biology of HIV and AIDS

Lesson 3 – Myths and Facts about HIV and AIDS including Modes of Transmission

Lesson 4 – Symptoms at the acute, chronic and late stages of HIV and AIDS

Lesson 5 – HIV Testing including CDC recommendations for testing, HIV screening and confirmatory tests and current Florida Law requirements for confidentiality, counseling, offering of HIV testing to pregnant women, and partner notification issues.

Lesson 6 – HIV & AIDS Global, National and Florida statistics by country, sex and transmission, race and ethnicity, state, and number of children affected.
